Little Baobab

The hubs and I love trying out new restaurants and different types of cuisine.  When I spotted a Groupon coupon for $25 for $40 worth of food and drinks at Little Baobab a local Senegalese place I jumped and quickly purchased the coupon!

I haven't had too much exposure to African cuisine.. a little Ethiopian which I really enjoyed.  So I was uber excited to try this place.



Hibiscus Juice and Hibiscus Margarita

They offered a selection of very exotic sounding juices and margarita's such as tamarind and ginger but the hibiscus was the house drink.  I was so glad we ordered it because it's nothing like I've ever had before!  It was both fruity and floral, sweet and refreshingly delicious.

Plantanos: Fried Plantains served with a tamarind yogurt sauce

The fried plantains were really good they were fried so the outside took on a caramelized texture and the inside was soft and custard-y.

Avocat Creole: half shelved avocado stuffed with spicy crab and rice

They took half of a GIGANTIC avocado and added in this insanely delicious spicy crab and rice mixture.  There was a lot of crab and it had a really nice kick to it.  I also really enjoyed the fresh grapefruit slices!

Maafe: Chicken in a curry peanut sauce w/ mushrooms, onions and potatoes

This was definitely the star of the evening.  I was really skeptical about ordering this dish but the hubs was insistent and I'm really glad we did.  I was thrown off because the menu said it was a peanut sauce but in reality it was actually a savory and sweet curry peanut sauce.. it's like nothing I've ever tasted before!!  I would never think to mix peanut butter and curry together but the spices were insanely delicious!

Crevette Coco: sauteed shrimp in a creamy coconut sauce w/ rice and fried potatoes

This was my dish and it was really yummy too the coconut sauce actually reminded me a bit of Thai curry however this was admittedly a bit heavier then a typical Thai curry.  The fried potatoes were so yummy dipped in the cream sauce and the rice just soaked up all the sauce.. SO GOOD.  I have this weird obsession with rice and sauces.  It's weird.  Don't ask me about it I can't explain it I just love rice with sauce. 

P.S.  I fell asleep in the car on the way from this dinner.  HAHA it was that good.

    WOW! This looks so tasty! I haven't had much African cuisine, except fusion South African at this decent restaurant in Laguna Beach, but this place looks like they have great tasting food! The peanut curry dish looks the tastiest too! And hibiscus? I LOVE anything hibiscus related, esp. hibiscus tea but I never knew about hibiscus margaritas! I bet that was YUMMY!! The Bay Area looks like a wonderful place to explore!

    I've yet to try african cuisine... then again where I live don't really offer that much either :(

    The food looks so delicious! Dont' worry i can't explain why i like rice and sauce too :p My family things i'm weird

    Unique and definitely exotic. I am glad you ventured out and explored new cuisine, it is fun. My husband would probably shake his head and say "hell no".

    rice and sauce is my thing too. fried plantains....yum. had them recently in a colombian restaurant.

    I've never tried African food either but this post definitely made me want to! & LOL at your falling asleep in the car after the meal because I tend to do that sometimes too!

    I'm with Carrie - I've never tried African food but your post definitely has me intrigued! I think there may be one Ethiopian place somewhere here...I'll have to check it out!

    Whoa, the food looks so good! If you go again, try the tamarind! I get this tamarind juice at this Lebanese place and it's really tasty! :3

    I've only tried Ehtopian, so I hope to try other African foods! ^^

    LISA!!!! Im finally back and am so happy to be blogging again!! T_T <-- tears of joy~! I've missed your blog oh-so-very much!! I've just caught up on all your posts!

    Oh and you must tell me how the restaurant owned by Joel Robouchon is! Im still doing my Paris research though slowed it down to make way for midterm!!!

    Your hubby was so sweet to have surprised you with that lovely gorgeous blue clutch!!! What I love even more is the way he surprised your with it!!!

    As for African food, it looks delicious! Ironically, just the other day I told bf that the next time we head to Disney World we need to try the African buffet, though I know it's going to be Americanized like crazy but I think it'd be a nice starting point! =DDD Im always excited to try new foods but unfortunately I usually don't end up liking them too much, which makes bf go - why do you try new things then?! LOL I dunno, because I wanna trrryyyy!!! =DDD

    P.s The alma bb came out again in pomme....Im sad and happy at the same time, I normally wouldn't make this side note but I see we share the love for designer purses (that some of my friends just don't get =P)

    WOOOW! That looks super good! i love ethiopian food, and generally cuisine that uses a lot of spices (indian, thai, etc. + japanese)

    The peanut curry sauce actually reminds me of satay back home in Indonesia hahaha and I too love rice and sauce hmmmm gets me hungry now =)

    OMg that looks delicious~~~and i luv the outside decor very ethnic~~~very different~~~and i luv the ambiance of the place~~~and food looks delicious~~~i dont like to try new things...lol mainly cuz i have a very sensitive stomach,and very often when i do try out new restaurant, i end up well...having very intimate relationship with the toilet~~~lol
